Where are the Carriers? :: Haiti Edition

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 7:05:46 PM
From the "The-U.S.S. Carl-Vinson-vs. Geological-Disasters" Department

In the wake of the Earthquake in Haiti, and in echo of the efforts of the US Navy after the Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina, the U.S.S. Carl Vinson has been deployed to the Caribbean to help relief efforts in the disaster that is Haiti.

It has been a LONG time since my last Where are the Carriers? post, and I thought everyone needed an update, as a lot has changed.

I stumbled across this last night.

As I’ve said before, I love Google Maps, and I’ve had some nice downtime just exploring the Earth with it. I’ve found a few gems myself (Like the U.S.S. New Jersey, outside, New Jersey; or the U.S.S. John C. Stennis, [or at least her berth, now -.ed] bearthed at San Diego; and I think this is the U.S.S. America, which was decomissioned and then sunk off the Virginia/North Carolina Coast just last year).

But The Edge of i-Hacked found a bunch of Google-Map-Goodies for everyone’s perusal.

Katrina vs. the U.S.S. Harry S. Truman

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 7:58:17 AM
From the "The-Planet-of-New-Orleans" Department

In an update to Yesterday’s Post, The Navy reports The Truman is going to the Gulf of Mexico.

I know I said this probably wouldn’t happen, but adding a Carrier to the relief fleet is not a bad idea, now that many of the popoulation is being moved to Houston, you need some command and control in the seaways, and another floating facility for refeuling and maintenance. (And SuperCarriers are good for that.)

There are seven carriers in the water, turning their screws. Its an exciting time.

I’m really eager, cause my favorite carrier: CVN-76 is getting prepped for her first major deployment.

Its funny, we have been doing this “Where are the Carriers?” Series for awhile, with this public information. But just recently, The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com have been getting quite a bit of additional information from families of our brave seamen and airmen. Where Are the Carriers: Debate over new forward deployment

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 11:32:02 AM

As the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk and U.S.S. John F. Kennedy approach retirement, the end of the non-Nuclear Supercarrier approaches. This affords us a major problem in the Navy’s carrier deployment.

Currently, the U.S.S. Kitty Hawk Strike Group is homeported in Yokosuka, Japan, and serves as the only continuously forward-deployed group in the fleet. As Yokosuka is unable to host a nuclear carrier, the United States will loose a vital strategic position in the next 10 years.

So now there is a debate on where the next forward deployed base will be?
Guam or Hawaii?

Where are the Carriers? (September 17, 2003)

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 10:58:25 AM

Those of you who are familiar with my other websites, you already know I’m a big fan of the United States Navy and her Fleet of SuperCarriers. I’m also the curious sort and I like to know where the Carriers are in this great big world of ours.

For those of you who think this is silly, think about this a moment:

  • An Aircraft Carrier carries approximately 85 aircraft, from warplanes, to support craft.
  • It is an independant 4.5 acres of soverign US “Turf”
  • It is escorted by a plethora of support ships, from AEGIS Cruiser warships and Destroyers, to Nuclear attack subs, to Marine Amphipious Assault Ships and various supoprt and Refeuling ships.
  • Essentially, a Carrier Group is a mini fleet/expiditionary force that can intimidate even the greatest super power.

And we have 12 of these things!
