Labor Day

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 7:56:49 AM

Several people have asked me about the purpose/history of the Labor Day Holiday.

Most people… well, let me rephrase that, as most modern women don’t follow this standard anymore … think that Labor Day is simply a benchmark for ladies and white shoes.

To be absolutely honest, I really didn’t know, so my explaination was that it was created by the AFL/CIO (The American Federation of Labor, and its Canadian Manifestation) for the purpose of celebrating the populist victory of the Labor Union and its presence against the edifice that is Big Business.

Well, for being an uninformed geek, I was almost right.

Remember

REMEM’BER, v.t. [Low L. rememoror; re and memoror. See Memory.]

    1. To have in the mind an idea which had been in the mind before, and which recurs to the mind without effort.
We are said to remember any thing, when the idea of it arises in the mind with the consciousness that we have had this idea before.

2. When we use effort to recall an idea, we are said to recollect it. This distinction is not always observed. Hence remember is often used as synonymous with recollect, that is, to call to mind. We say, we cannot remember a fact, when we mean, we cannot recollect it.

Remember the days of old. Deut. 32.

3. To bear or keep in mind; to attend to.

Remember what I warn thee; shun to taste.

4. To preserve the memory of; to preserve from being forgotten.

Let them have their wages duly paid, and something over to remember me.

5. To mention. [Not in use.]
6. To put in mind; to remind; as, to remember one of his duty. [Not in use.]
7. To think of and consider; to meditate. Ps. 63.
8. To bear in mind with esteem; or to reward. Eccles. 9.
9. To bear in mind with praise or admiration; to celebrate. 1Chron. 16.
10. To bear in mind with favor, care, and regard for the safety or deliverance of any one. Ps. 74. Gen. 8. Gen. 19.
11. To bear in mind with intent to reward or punish. 3John 10. Jer. 31.
12. To bear in mind with confidence; to trust in. Ps. 20.
13. To bear in mind with the purpose of assisting or relieving. Gal. 2.
14. To bear in mind with reverence; to obey.

Remember thy Creator in the days of thy youth. Eccles. 12.

15. To bear in mind with regard; to keep as sacred; to observe.

Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Ex. 20.
To remember mercy, is to exercise it. Hab. 3.

Where are the Carriers? (September 17, 2003)

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 10:58:25 AM

Those of you who are familiar with my other websites, you already know I’m a big fan of the United States Navy and her Fleet of SuperCarriers. I’m also the curious sort and I like to know where the Carriers are in this great big world of ours.

For those of you who think this is silly, think about this a moment:

  • An Aircraft Carrier carries approximately 85 aircraft, from warplanes, to support craft.
  • It is an independant 4.5 acres of soverign US “Turf”
  • It is escorted by a plethora of support ships, from AEGIS Cruiser warships and Destroyers, to Nuclear attack subs, to Marine Amphipious Assault Ships and various supoprt and Refeuling ships.
  • Essentially, a Carrier Group is a mini fleet/expiditionary force that can intimidate even the greatest super power.

And we have 12 of these things!

VeriSign does it again

Filed under: RantsJeremy @ 8:34:21 AM

VeriSign, Inc. has not been receiving much in terms of good press. In fact, everything I see about this company is negative.

For those of you who do not know, VeriSign is the master registrar for all the .COM, .NET, .ORG domain names. If you have a domain name under these top level devices, it’s ultimately leased by VeriSign, to your Domain Name Registrar and made available to you, under the permission of ICANN.

  • First, there was the issue with ICANN (The Cabal that owns the rights to every domain name in existance) and their decision to remove VeriSign’s rights to the .NET, and .ORG domains (VRSN’s Stock plummetted 50% that evening (before the markets opened) and they have yet to recover from that (and that was 2 years ago)).
  • And then their was their “marketing campaign” to conveniently warn the owners of registered domain names that if they didn’t renew (With them) they would lose their Domain name.
The criminal part of this, the people they warned were not their customers, they were customers of OTHER registrars. So if you had a domain name with melbourneIT, or INWW, responding to this mail would essentially allow Verisign to take over the administrative control of your domain name. And you would be paying VeriSign instead of your original Registrar for the use of that domain.)

  • The whole issue with the Ninth Circuit Supreme Court, after they neglected to respect the user security of a rather popular domain name, and sold the domain to someone else.
  • And now….
VeriSign will now redirect mispelled URLs to their advertising service.

Because of weather pattern formerly known as Hurrican Marty, now known as Tropical Depression Marty, the desert is seeing over 24 hours of straight rain.

AOL, the Media, Telemarketers, and you

Filed under: RantsJeremy @ 1:34:06 PM

Warning: The following contains a very bitter rant, if the following offends you, feel assured that Free Speech is a good thing.

I discovered the following from reading up on BlogOSphere-dot-us this morning. I found the following too humerous and insane to NOT comment about it:

The AOL News Network (a.k.a. CNN pulled a rather dumb stunt the other day. I call the News Network the AOL Network, because its the network for people who don’t know how to think for themselves (so CNN does it for them) Just like the Software/Internet Service Provider CNN is owned by, AOL is for users who DON’T know how to use a computer. The flipside of that, CNN is for those people who require a left-wing bias to understand the news of today.)

      But I digress.

Tucker Carlson (Never trust a man with two last names), a co-anchor for Crossfire (and friend to telemarketers) was challenged by one of his viewers (who probably doesn’t like Tucker’s stance on Telemarketing) to give out his home phone number on the air.

    So Tucker did.

    Except, it WASN’T his number.

    It was FOX News Headquarters.

      But I digress

In my research at work, I stumbled across this little tidbit from another blogger, Nathan, the author of Brain Fertilizer.

He has an interesting title, too. (Read the comments, I rant there too!)
