VeriSign II: The Wrath of ICANN

Filed under: Mindless BanterJeremy @ 12:32:18 PM

You might remember, my previous post regarding VeriSign and their dark plot to swallow all the web hits with their wildcard domain name search landing page.

I saw this on Slashdot.org. ICANN.org (The people who own all the domain names) issued a very harsh reprimand of Verisign.

Movie Review: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

As you should know by now, I love Humphrey Bogart. And a movie that I’ve always wanted to see, but never got around to, was The Treasure of the Sierra Madre.

People have told me it was the action film of its day, but I saw something else to it, a trio of characters all with individual reactions to a fourth character. (See Below)

Vernacular

As I was crafting an E-mail to a friend this morning, I noticed I was using a lot of unorthodox vernacular that I’ve invented or stolen from somewhere else over the years.

I thought to myself, “How confusing of me.”

Most of these were made as a joke, but eventually developed into my common tongue. (So much so, that in some cases, people around me have adopted them as everyday language.)

Well, this justifies my computing behiavior.

(There’s always a study to justify and and unjustify things.)

But, on h t t p colon slash slash slash-dot dot org, they highlight a series of studies where Multiple Monitors increase productivity.

Now, as I read these articles, I’m not sure if they are speaking of split screening, or multiple PCs with multiple monitors.

Sad People

Filed under: RantsJeremy @ 10:38:59 AM

I wonder about people sometimes.

Meaning: I wonder what drives people to do really odd things.

For example: Every week, I get some genius leaving me a message in my GuestBook.
Somethink like:

    Name: Someone
    E-mail: someone@anywhere
    Homepage: homeless
    Comment: …sigh

And that purpose of this is what?

What Ever happened to the Whig Party?

Filed under: ParodiesJeremy @ 9:08:25 PM

The Whig Party?
When was the last time the Whigs had someone in the White House?

Answer: Millard Fillmore, after he took over for Zachary Taylor who was elected in 1848
Taylor’s Presidency didn’t end so swell in 1850

After that, the last Whig to make a run for the White House was Winfield Scott in 1852, and he swung a whole 42 Electoral Votes in that election against Franklin Pierce.

Since then you havn’t heard much from the once proud Whig Political Party.

Until now.

I stumbled across this on Matthew-Maynard-dot-net.

Miracle in the Meadowlands

Filed under: FootballJeremy @ 2:15:42 PM

It was ugly, it was not something one would sit and watch though (I didn’t) and it always seems to end in something spectacular, something out-of-this world.

The Philadelphia Eagles went to play the New [Jersey] Giants.

Those silly Giants.
Pesky Giants.

Haven’t you learned that you have to expect the unexpected when the Eagles come to town?

The Desiginated Hitter is an Abomination to Baseball – and other pitching quips

He was just a hitter.

Corporate Culture Geography

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 11:24:50 AM

I was in a couple of conversations yesterday, regarding the differences in corporate cultures across this nation of ours.

And, working for a multi-national organization, with offices across the country, I’ve observed a lot of the permutations of corporate culture.
Corporate Culture, of course, being: Dress Codes, Meeting Etiquite, Communication Styles, etc.

Some of this common sense, but all of this is original thought.

TV Review: 24

One of the truely revolutionizing things that happened in the past few years of Prime Time Television was the concept of “24“.

Imagine an entire day, displayed in “real time” over the course of 24 episodes. Where each hour episode corresponds to each hour of that single day.

So far the show has gone 2 seasons, and is about to start a third. “The Third Day”. And so far, this thing keeps getting better and better!

I just finished watching Season 2 on DVD, and it was amazing. Much better the Season 1.

I’m a Radical!

What Irrational Number Are You?
You are √2

You are in good company, many other square roots are also irrational numbers. Just by being a square root you have been branded a radical. You are considered very attractive, especially by Europeans (at least on paper.)

You fear that a relationship with another √2 may somehow end up complex and ultimately imaginary. In reality, only another √2 will make you whole.

Your lucky number is approximately 1.41421356

Steve McQueen: 3, The Other Guys: 6

Filed under: Movies,ReviewsJeremy @ 7:13:47 PM Tags:

As I mentioned Here, and Here, Steve McQueen is not a winning actor. But he’s not always a losing actor.

I’ve recently added a new McQueen Movie to my Steve McQueen awareness:

  1. The Great Escape
  2. The Magnificent Seven
  3. Bullitt
  4. The Thomas Crown Affair
  5. The Sand Pebbles
  6. The Cincinnati Kid
  7. Hell is For Heroes
  8. The Towering Inferno
  9. The Getaway

(almost as racey as its horrible remake)

SocioEconomics and Bovine Behavior

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 8:33:34 AM

When I was just about to enter high school. My mother read me an article from Dear Abby.

It was the now famous two cow model for Economic/Political Structures:

I found a reprint of it here.

Since then, I’ve always referred back to it (Cause its pretty much accurate)

And roommates who are high school history teachers, have incorporated it into their lesson plans.
I think people like it because its takes overly-complex political theory (that pseudogeniuses like Marx and Lenin droned over for years and delivered nothing) and boils them down to their pure essence.
