Pontification Number 3450

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 8:08:23 PM

Why is it, when I was walking through the campus bookstore today, all pro-left, anti-right books like Michael Moore, Al Franken, and Alan Colmes were all 30% off the cover price?
Meanwhile, those discounts were not to be found on books with a conservative slant.

So why is that?
Liberal books don’t sell as well?
They don’t want to encourage sales of conservative books?

Nuanced = Unfit?

Filed under: Mindless BanterJeremy @ 10:47:01 AM

People who support John Kerry, describe his political mindless banter as “nuanced”.

    Nuance: n (French)
      1. A subtle or slight degree of difference, as in meaning, feeling, or tone; a gradation.
      2. Expression or appreciation of subtle shades of meaning, feeling, or tone: a rich artistic performance, full of nuance.

“a Subtle degree of difference“? You know what they say: The Worst Kind of Lie is the one that is slightly different from the truth.

*scoffs* In Kerry’s Case, Nuanced really means, “I can’t say the same thing twice.”

Today’s Opinion Journal Featured Article is an Editorial from John O’Neill, who served with the Haughty French-looking, Massachusetts Democrat, who by-the-way also served in Vietnam..

I encourage you to read it. It requires a free subcription to the OpinionJournal-dot-com website, but it will be freely available tomorrow.

Trolling around the net, it looks Headshotlike Yahoo has developed a new little gimmick for their Yahoo Messenger. Yahoo Avatars. So I had some fun with it.

It doesn’t QUITE look like Fulllook like me. But its a close resemblance. Personall,y I think the guy should tuck in his shirt and invest more in belts, and less in highlighting his short hair.

And he could use some more Slashdot Green. Maybe I’d hire this kid to do my web design work.

Cinco de Mayo

Filed under: LocalJeremy @ 12:07:26 PM
From the "It\'s-not-a-party-unless-it-has-a-Spanish-Name!" Department

Today is May 5, 2004.
For those of you who live in a sorry place in the nation, you do not realize it is CINCO DE MAYO! Which is Spanish for The Fifth of May.

Living here in Tucson, we celebrate this day more then the Fourth of July (not that we don’t appreciate the Forth of July, but here in the dry, waterless desert, fireworks are frowned upon.)

From the "You-gotta-keep-em'-separated" Department

This week, the latest roommate evacuated the GeekBrigade. Matt left and is going to get himself married on the 28th. As he loves his bride-to-be, it would be best if he and she lived elsewhere, and not have to put up with 5 bachelors under one roof.

He marks the 3rd founding member of the house to leave and get hitched.

Movie Review: Big Fish

Some people have figured out what I like to see in a movie. (You must be reading my Movie Reviews) and have sent many a suggestion on what I should rent next from NetFlix. This weekend, I saw Big Fish, and I was plesantly surprised.

I first heard of this film via the Theatrical Trailers of other films I’ve recently enjoied. I didn’t think much of it, just another of those fantastic Tim Burton unrealities, and I can only take so much Beetlejuice and Pee-Wee.

Why didn’t I listen to my mother?

Filed under: Pontifications,RantsJeremy @ 1:13:58 PM Tags:
From the "Back-In-The-Day" Department

There are some days when I think the Internet is too dangerous a place for me to play in.
Eight Years ago, yes, it was a dangerous place, as the lion’s share of the iPopulation were professional computer geeks, so more then likely when you met someone, they knew more then you did. (And probably knew more about you then you thought they did.)

So today, I’m trolling around one of my daily reads: h-t-t-p colon forward-slash forward-slash slash-dot-dot-org. And I run across an interesting personal tidbit, an old pseudo-friend of mine, and one of the authors of SlashDot, CowboyNeal, put a blog on his website.

But alas, his popularity has gotten the best of him, and he’s getting personally attacked. Granted, this is old news [February], but it still bothers me. Kind of like why I get frustrated at the Intentional Attacks of people.

Can you believe it?

This post is #500 of the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com set. To celebrate, I thought I’d provide a Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Hall of Fame.

But first some Administrivia:

  • By My Calucaltions, this website has been active for 2 years and 19 weeks, meaining that there have been 4 posts per week. (You might have noticed that entries are slowly becoming semi-daily)
  • As of this post, there have been 335 Comments, on 92 articles. (Not including Articles with zero comments, and not including Spam which I deleted) giving an average of 3.6 comments per article. I’ve only started this trend of allowing comments, so it seems like I’ll let the trend continue.

Steve McQueen: 7, the Other Guys: 9

Filed under: Movies,ReviewsJeremy @ 7:08:23 PM Tags:

It’s been awhile, but I just watched another Steve McQueen movie.

As you recall from Previous Posts. I’ve a big fan of Steve McQueen, and I’m astonished that as he’s mostly cast as a protagonist, he’s not always the winner in his movies. I’m a big fan!. This latest one does not help his record.

My Steve McQueen awareness List:

  1. The Great Escape
  2. The Magnificent Seven
  3. Bullitt
  4. The Thomas Crown Affair
  5. The Sand Pebbles
  6. The Cincinnati Kid
  7. Hell is For Heroes

Pontification Number: 3451

WASHINGTON, May 17, 2004 — A roadside bomb containing the nerve agent sarin – a substance Saddam Hussein’s regime insisted it had destroyed more than a decade ago – exploded near a U.S. military convoy traveling near Baghdad, coalition officials said today.

From GlobalSecurity.org, and Best of the Web, Today

Aside: Sarin is a Chemical Weapon of Mass Destruction. A Nerve Agent that Iraq was NOT supposed to have.
So no, this doesn’t justify anything, but it does call for some people to be quiet. (So far the Global War on Terror has unearthed more WMDs then the U.N. inspectors.)

The BAD news is, our brave boys and girls over in Iraq will start having to deal with this junk now.
So no, I’m no celebrating. (Sometimes I hate being right.)
