Welcome to 2006; and 2006 welcomes careful drivers.
Well, 2005 was a good year for me, the last month was a bit uncomfortable, but the end brings a new feeling of new beginnings.
I’m hopeful for 2006, personally.

Ironic, that Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Vicinity should be returning to Tucson today.
Ten Years ago today, January 2, 1996; The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com and their trusty Chevy Cavalier rolled into their new home, after a mighty-mighty Tour-de-Jeremy road trip across the United States (part of which was chronicled here.)
I just updated Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com to the recently released Version 2.0. It wasn’t all that difficult of an upgrade, and Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com visitors should not see anything different. (Most of the changes were done in the back end)
Behold, the last Searchy Fun for the Year 2005.
For those of you who came in late, these are the top 20 Search Results used to find Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com on the various Search Engines on the World Wide Web.
Let’s get to Checking!

While this is one of the better “blonde jokes” I’ve seen, I think you could easily plug “AOL User” as the subject, and its still hilarious (and true!)
This has been a special week in the world of the United States SuperCarriers. So the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Team has been hard at work to compile the answer to the question that many a world leader has asked since December 7, 1941.
I’ll give you a hint:

More stories from the great humanitarian nation that is China.
China has successfully petitioned Microsoft to shut down a disident blog of Michael Anti.
Granted, I’m not frowning at Microsoft (for once) they are meerly following their standards about users following the local laws of their country.
I’m frowning at the oppressive Chinese laws operating inside the Great Firewall of China.

Somehow, somewhere, in the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com web-architecture; the mySQL server went FOOM.
(FOOM is a technical term. It looks and sounds like something blowing up, but without the combustion of blowing up. It can involve smoke.)
[Okay, I had to add that to the Vernacular Glossary Database (Which also uses the same broken mySQL) - ed.]

While this could easily turn into a defamation blog; a rather snarky political junkie has put a “Live Blog” of Samuel Alito, himself!

There is some Troubling News from the Ukraine, via The Politburo Diktat; and Russia is not too far away from the scandal.
UKRAINE’S Parliament sacked the government overnight over a costly gas deal with Russia, pushing the country deeper into crisis just two months before a parliamentary election.
President Viktor Yushchenko, whose euphoric rise to power has been marred by a weak economy, bitter feuds and graft scandals, said the vote to ditch his second government in just over three months was unconstitutional.
Its clear to this blogger (ie. me) that Russia is not yet willing to let go of the precious territory that is Ukraine.

I’m guessing that most readers of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com have not spent more than 30 seconds listening/watching the Alito hearings. (And to be honest, you have not missed much.)
I listened to about 50%, and was half listening at the time, so I’ve got a sample size of 25%
This is the attempt of the The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com to round-up their observations of the events of the Alito Circus.

After listening to two hearings for confimation to the Supreme Court, I have figured out some of the codewords that both Republicans and Democrats have been using. It is no different than the cubicle jungle when cubicle monkeys learn a new catchphrase.

Since I pretty much cannot talk about the Philadelphia Eagles for almost a year, I might as well make fun of a rather interesting convergence of Football and Politics. It is called the Washington Redskins vs. the Seattle Seahawks; or as the Seattle Times refers to Washington [D.C.] vs. Seattle [Washington].
Only on the Left-Coast could something like this happen:
To avoid insulting native American heritage, the Seattle Times decided to limit severely the use of the term Redskins in the paper — even if a team with that name will dominate news coverage this week. The Times will not use the moniker in headlines or captions. Reporters can use it only once, as a first reference, in all stories. The Redskins will be referred to almost exclusively as Washington — which could get a little confusing for local readers who also live in that state.
Henseforth, to all Homestar-runner-dot-com fans, January 13th shall be known as Trogday.
It is amazing how much a silly little cartoon gimmick has perpetuated in today’s society.
(Plus, I can’t believe its been three-years)
Its a slow Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Newsday, so we, The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com present you with a rather interesting (at least to us) meme which we found out there in the World Wide Web of blogs.

I stumbled across this last night.
As I’ve said before, I love Google Maps, and I’ve had some nice downtime just exploring the Earth with it. I’ve found a few gems myself (Like the U.S.S. New Jersey, outside, New Jersey; or the U.S.S. John C. Stennis, [or at least her berth, now -.ed] bearthed at San Diego; and I think this is the U.S.S. America, which was decomissioned and then sunk off the Virginia/North Carolina Coast just last year).
But The Edge of i-Hacked found a bunch of Google-Map-Goodies for everyone’s perusal.

Last night, while geeking out, The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com were quickly coming to the conclusion that their Geek-O-Sphere needed a serious upgrade. Too many applications were crashing, and well, its time for new computers.
Currently, “Kosh” is the primary box, and he’s only running 350MHz under the hood.
“Morden” is the secondary, and he’s got 800MHz under the hood.
Its 2006, and we’ve not crossed the Gigahurt barrier! (Yes, we know how Hertz is spelled, Hurt just sounds meaner)

The big news on all the networks and the blogs is this:
Bin Laden offers Americans truce
“We know that the majority of your people want this war to end and opinion polls show the Americans do not want to fight the Muslims on Muslim land, nor do they want Muslims to fight them on their [US] land.
“But Bush does not want this and claims that it is better to fight his enemies on their land rather than on American land.
“Bush tried to ignore the polls that demanded that he end the war in Iraq.
“We are getting increasingly stronger while your situation is getting from bad to worse,” he told the US, referring to poor US troop morale and the huge economic losses inflicted by the war.
“The war in Iraq is raging and the operations in Afghanistan are increasing.”
“In response to the substance of the polls in the US, which indicate that Americans do not want to fight Muslims on Muslim land, nor do they want Muslims to fight them on their land, we do not mind offering a long-term truce based on just conditions that we will stick to.
“We are a nation that Allah banned from lying and stabbing others in the back, hence both parties of the truce will enjoy stability and security to rebuild Iraq and Afghanistan, which were destroyed by war.
Its amazing, last year at this date Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com was celebrating 3-years of bloghood; today, a year later, it celebrates 4-years!
It is amazing how time and space work.
Even more amazing, 2 Years ago the SAME Website celebrated 2-years!
What are the odds that a website celebrates an anniversary on the SAME EXACT DAY?
Awhile back, Randy asked the perennial question: Why do you blog?
I ask myself that question everyday.

Well, since the Eagles are no where to be seen in the NFC Title game (something that hasn’t happened in five years) I’ve got to give props to the “other” team from Pennsylvania.

They beat the Broncos, and that is something I can cheer for.

Remember all those news stories in 1993 about how the nomination of former ACLU lawyer Ruth Bader Ginsburg to replace conservative Justice Byron White on the United States Supreme Court would “tilt the balance of the court to the left?”
Of course you don’t. Because there weren’t any.
In the past three months, the major media have repeatedly hammered away at the theme that Judge Samuel Alito Jr. would “shift the Supreme Court to the right” if he replaced retiring Justice Sandra Day O’Connor.
This blurb is from Reason Online’s The Ginsburg Shift
It didn’t matter then—it shouldn’t now

I watched a little of the vote. (It really wasn’t a vote, it was more of a closing statements bath of mindless banter.) I could not watch/listen to most of it without keeping my appetite for Lunch.

I think there is a misconception, in society, about what is Liberty and what is Civil Government.
One of the theories, that I hold to, was something I learned when I read the Second Treatise of Civil Government by John Locke, who has been called the primary philosopher of the United States Contitutional Convention (as many of his writings are echoed in the Federalist Papers as well as the works of James Madison, and many of the Constitutional Framers)
In particular, I point the readers of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com to Chaper 7 of the above text: Chapter 7: Of Political of Civil Society and Chapter 8: Chapter 8: Of the Beginning of Political Societies
