Are you concerned that your profligate personal lifestyle is harming the environment? Losing sleep over the long-term ecological damage resulting from those greenhouse gases constantly emitted by your family, your cars, your pets, and your shrubbery? Do you want to become carbon-neutral, but just don’t know how?
Well rejoice, sinner! Carbon atonement is no longer the exclusive preserve of the Malibu set — with the Iowahawk EcoPals Network! Several websites/newspapers are talking about this topic of “Nearshoring“.
This has been tossed around for a few years now, given the surge of technology jobs being sent to places like India, the Philippines and East Djiboutistan. (Off-shoring) But I’ve also seen evidence of this near shoring phenomenon in places like Ireland, Argentina, and obviously Mexico. (Go NAFTA, and credit to CAFTA too.) … and possibly Lower Djiboutistan. (more…)

Thompson, was a 1+ term Senator, and won two elections: (1) To run for the unfilled Tennessee Senate seat (Vacated by Al Gore) in 1994, and (2) the re-election for that seat in 1996. He was never defeated. And declined to run again in 2002.
During that time, he was the Chair of the Senate Committee on Government Affairs, and when the Democrats briefly took the majority in the Senate, he was the Ranking Minority member.
However, Thompson is most known for his Acting career, and his role on the Television show Law and Order. (Personally, I know him better from The Hunt for Red October [the Department Name is one of his lines in the movie])
As of this posting, Thompson has only expressed interest in running for President, and has not yet formally announced, or even formed a Exploratory Committee. However, given the current field, he and Mitt Romney would be the most Conservative candidates. (more…)

On Feb. 25, 2007, NASA scientists were calibrating some cameras aboard the STEREO-B spacecraft and they pointed the instruments at the sun. Here is what they saw:

Since the dawn of the Internet Age, I’ve seen several of these “How to make Geek employees happy” lists. Most are quite condescending: “I am Geek, you don’t understand me, make special cases for me, and give me what I want, and accept my iconoclastic behavior.”
This is a little more of the same, but for the first time, I really identified with one in particular:
In each genre, the protagonists are the English, with some Irish Help, and the antagonists are the French.
In each genre, the protagonists are the heroes, the antagonists are the sub-par, almost barbarian French.
The concept perturbed me. (more…)
Cisco alerted me to the news, with this poke via AIM:
Cisco:The nest ‘demonstrates the resilience of this species and its apparent growing tolerance to human activity,’ said Dan Brauning, a supervisor with the state Game Commission, in a statement Friday. Cisco: Kinda gives you hope that you too could eventually become tolerant to human activity. :)

Chad, over at Pirate King, has noted that he is getting a lot of search hits for his article regarding Fred Thompson.

Meet Knut, he’s a 3-month old Polar Bear. Back in December, he was abandoned by his Welfare Queen mother, who was living on the dole in a Berlin Zoo.
Now that the Zoo has taken over taking care of the Bear pup, like a bunch of angry heartless Republicans, the Animal Rights activists have cried foul, saying that the bear should be put out of the public misery.

First, there were websites; people knew who you were
Then, there were blogs; websites which let everyone know who you are, and what you thought
Then, there was myspace; websites which let everyone know who you are, what you do, what you like, who your friends are, and who was stalking you.
Then, signal-to-noise ratio went downhill.
Now, I see a new “service”, called, Twitter. It is essentially a personal tagging engine, so you can share with the world what you are doing. right now. or right. now. And populating a database with stuff that makes my mindless banter almost seem entertaining. (more…)
More pontificating on the most popular unannounced candidate:
Paul Mirengoff at Powerline Blog:
In a sense, then, Thompson looks like the perfect blend of the Allen/Frist/Romney/Gingrich and McCain/Giuliani “factions.” He seems to combine the conservatism of the former cluster with at least some of the popularity and stature of the latter pairing. This is not to suggest that Thompson is a national hero like McCain and Giuliani. But in addition to a long and distinguished record of public service, he has the good fortune to play a distinguished public servant on television. Millions of Americans see Thompson exercise sound judgment every week as the district attorney on “Law and Order.” I’m reliably informed that the show’s creator, Dick Wolf, developed the persona of this fictional D.A. specifically for Thompson, and that the actor/politician protects his image by pushing back when he thinks his lines don’t portray him in the proper light. But the point isn’t whether we’re seeing the real Fred Thompson on the show; the point is that, if Thompson runs, millions of America will see the character when they see the candidate, and to that extent will like what they see.
So has this changed since Bush senior or Reagan was in office? If so, why do you think it has?
He was referring to the level of anti-Bush sentiment and the level of resistance to George W. Bush’s judicial nominees, compared to that of Clinton’s extreme nominees.
I didn’t have a good answer then. But I kept thinking about it.
Then Dad sent me the following video, on the subject of Global Warming.
The answer to the question was obliquely buried 45 minutes into the program. But it hit me in the face like a baseball bat. (more…)
