Things I’ve Learned while Being Unemployed

From the "Postcards-from-the-Edge" Department

It has been a week since the Lay off, and during that time, I’ve had a unique opportunity to observe things from a different perspective. I’ve observed some anecdotal things on this side of the Unemployment Line, and I thought I’d share them with you:

Da Forum

From the "You-call-this-a-forum?" Department

Some of you might remember, back in the day, on the previous site, there was a Community Forum.

It was quite the happen’n place, lots of antics by EvilHomer, Marshie, and a few other fans.

Unfortunately, I forget the actual circumstances involved, I had to shut down the site, and the forum. And all was lost.

But now, the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Forum is back in business.
With a snazzy new name, and logo!

Book Review: Jennifer Government

I was first introduced to the book, Jennifer Government, through the web game Nation States, which was just a vehicle to get people to buy this book. (Okay, I was suckered, but not really, as you read on.)

Today, I crossed it off the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List.

Stem Cells, Skin Cells, what’s the difference?

From the "Stem-Cells, Shem-Cells" Department

An interesting twist in current events:

Scientists turn ordinary skin cells into stem cells

Separate teams of scientists on two continents on Tuesday revealed they have created stem cells from human skin cells – a development that could eventually allow researchers to sidestep the contentious moral issues that have hobbled early studies in the promising field.

The startling breakthrough was hailed by parties on all sides of the stem cell debate, because it raised the prospect that the controversial destruction of human embryos and the need to harvest eggs from women donors might one day no longer be needed.

Well, lookie here. Harvesting Human Embryos, a la, The Matrix, is not what science needs to do after all.

Book Review: Soon I Will Be Invincible

Just before I went on Vacation, (The real one, not the lay off) one of my roommates lent me a book to read, which he in turn had borrowed from Growler.
Soon I Will Be Invincible
I had seen the book when I was perusing the local bookstores, and even picked it up, but since it was a hardcover, I put it back down. I had the intention of reading it. It looked entertaining, in a literary sort of way.

Anyways, I just finished it last night, and crossed it off the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List.

NeoCon Dreams do come True

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 12:01:11 AM
From the "I *heart* NeoCons" Department

Again, I’ve rarely wavered in my support for the Global War on Terror, and the War in Iraq. Read through this blog, and you will agree I’ve rarely wavered in my support of said operations.

Now that there is little bad news to talk about, thanks to “The Surge” this year, good news continues to come, and I heard this development on the Radio today:
Iraqi Government Prepared to Offer U.S. Presence, Business Preference for Security

The United States would be foolish to turn this down.

The Democrat Demographic Problem

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 4:38:51 PM
From the "The-South-Will-Rise-Again or Not-Another-NorthEast-Democrat" Department

You may remember my three part series on the Demographics of Presidential Elections, I highlighted an interesting trend, in the later half of the 20th Century. Since the Johnson Administration, the only Democrats who have captured the White House have been Southerners:
- Johnson of Texas
- Carter of Georgia
- Clinton of Arkansas

Non-Southern Democrats have much difficulty capturing the White House.
- Kerry of Massachusetts (Southern VP [Edwards] – but couldn’t carry that state)
- Gore of Tennessee (Southern State, but Gore couldn’t even carry his own state in that election)
- Dukakis of Massachusetts
- Mondale of Minnesota
- McGovern of South Dakota
- Humphrey of Minnesota

So now that the Primary Race is pretty much set for Iowa, I took a look at the candidates from both parties.

Generational Gaps

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 12:15:19 PM
From the "People-try-to-put-us-down; Just-because-we-get-around; Talkin' 'bout-my-generation" Department

One of the things I’ve noticed, whilst looking for a new job, is that in the 8 years since I last looked for a job, a new Generation has come into the Job Market. The talking heads are calling it everything from Generation Y, to Echo Boomers, to the Millennium Generation, or just “Millennials” for short.

Given that there are still Baby Boomers in the market, and my Generation X, this makes three separate generational types in the same workforce. (Not the first time in history, but take a look at the generalizations of each of the types and you might see what I mean)
