Book Review: The Ionian Mission

Filed under: Books,ReviewsJeremy @ 6:38:12 PM Tags:

I just crossed Patrick O’Brian’s The Ionian Mission off of the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List.

So far I’ve read eight of the Aubrey-Maturin Series, and I’m safe to say this is easily one of my top three favorites of O’Brian’s work.

Book Review: It Takes a Family: The Culture of Conservatism

I finally finished off It Takes a Family, by Rick Santorum, the former Senator from my home state of Pennsylvania.

I received this book as a gift, for doing some geek work several years ago, and it had been sitting on my “In Progress” list for 150 weeks. It wasn’t that it was a poor book, it just had a lot of information to digest. But, it is now marked as completed, on the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List.

Brett Favre hates the National Football League

From the "Brett-Favre-hates-you" Department

We have already discussed that Brett Favre hates the Green Bay Packers (and I’ve been proven to be right, look at what he did.)

For those of you who don’t watch ESPN.

  • Brett Favre retired
  • Brett Favre “unretired” and there was talk that Chicago or Minnesota would pick him up.
  • Green Bay has offered to pay Brett Favre 20 Million Dollars to STAY retired.
  • Brett Favre unretired officially and returned to Green Bay for Training Camp (Proving he hates the Green Bay Packers with a vengeance)
  • Word is, Favre is not going to be starting QB for Green Bay so he wants to be traded.
  • Favre and his post-retirement antics have taken ESPN hostage.

I don’t know about you, but I think Brett Favre hates the entire National Football League.

Google’s March to the Sea

Now, secretly, when I heard the news about Russia verses the former Republic Georgia, I humorosly thought about the state of Georgia.

Well, thanks to Google, I can use my joke:

Google News informs us that the Russians are invading the South

There is an internet rumor floating around the tidewaters of the right wing blogs (think of them like the National Enquirer of new reporting)

It seems that someone has uncovered Barack H. Obama’s former name, from his Dual Citizenship papers in Indonesia.

But this rumor confirms something I’ve suspected for some time.

And it appears that the elegant name which we know today, for the eloquent speaking Democratic Candidate, is not what he grew up with.

Bolus of the Day

From the "Follow-the-bouncing-ball" Department

While this isn’t Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com related, I’ve been “published” so to speak over at Bolus. (An IowaHawk subsidiary.)

Anyways, one of the gimmicks of Bolus is their daily “Ball of the Day” article. Where the article features a famous, or not so famous spherical object (or spherical reference, like Lucille Ball); and they ask for suggestions.

I suggested “Rover” from “The Prisoner”.

Sochi Russia
It was a decision made last year.

A Purpose Driven Forum

From the "Get-on-your-Saddleback-and-Ride!" Department

I paid little attention to the Saddleback Forum, this weekend, and listened to a bit of the post coverage on Saturday and Sunday.

While I thought that both candidates gave adequate answers to Rick Warren’s questions, I, like most of the media agree, think McCain did a great job to Obama’s Mediocre job. Especially in the light that Obama is supposed to be a great speaker, while McCain is old and worn out; Obama should have danced circles around McCain. (Just like Obama should be beating McCain by double digits in the polls, and not in a dead heat.)

But one of Obama’s answers stuck in my craw:

The Joe Biden pick for the Barack Obama ticket still puzzles me a little bit.

Here you have a candidate whose entire platform (or at least half of it) is “Change”. The Candidate of Change. The Agent of Change. Hope and Change. Change you can Believe In. Change Change Change.

He’s anti-establishment (Or at least trying to look/talk/act that way.)

Add Joe Biden.

From the "North-to-Alaska, They're-goin' North, the rush-is-on" Department

This was one of the Vice Presidential Hopefuls I was hoping for, the other was Bobby Jindal from Louisiana, or former Pennsylvania Governor Tom Ridge. But Sarah Palin is a good choice.

I should say, Palin is one of the choices I was not hoping against, like Romney, Huckabee, Lieberman, or Hillary Clinton, or any other Senator for that matter. (We have enough Senators on the Presidential Tickets already.)
