The President’s Czars

From the "With-my-team-I-am-an-absolute-czar" Department

CZAR:

  1. an emperor or king.
  2. (often initial capital letter) the former emperor of Russia.
  3. an autocratic ruler or leader.
  4. any person exercising great authority or power in a particular field: a czar of industry.
  5. an informal term for certain high-level officials in the United States Executive Branch who wield unspecified power, and operate independently of the United State Legislative Branch, as they do not undergo a confirmation process and are directly appointed by the Chief Executive.

Book Review: Flying Colours

Filed under: Books,ReviewsJeremy @ 10:03:26 PM Tags:

Today, I crossed off the Horatio Hornblower book Flying Colours from the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List.

It was a gift from The-Roommate-Formerly-Known-as-Matthew-Maynard. (He knows I dig Hornblower)

—- ==== SPOILERS BELOW ==== —-

While the cover looks chaotic. Our hero takes a big turn for the better.

Oooops, maybe I’ve said too much.

A Change for US Americans

From the "Some-people-out-there-in-our-nation-don't-have-maps; such-as-and-so-forth" Department

As I was contorting a pair of Google Maps to work out the boundaries of a comment in the previous post, I was wondering about this age-old-concern about people unable to grasp elementary geography.

An issue so complex that it stumped Miss. Teen South Carolina in 2007.

I was quickly informed that it was Michael Bay.

The End of Analog

As of Today, Analog Television has gone the way of the Dinosaur in the United States.

Personally, I don’t understand why the big rush from Analog to digital took place.
When I first heard of this changeover, it was to give more bandwidth to the Cell Phone Market. But Cellphones got tired of waiting for the change over, and moved to a whole different band, and didn’t need the UHF or VHF frequency ranges anymore.

Now that Frequency Band will be vacant and for sale by the FCC. So what is the rush?

State of the Geek (2009)

Filed under: Mindless Banter,PersonalJeremy @ 9:45:45 AM Tags:

And now, for entirely unimportant reasons, I would like to give my 35th annual State of the Geek address.

The occasion for this address is the fact that the Earth is in a specific position in its yearly orbit of the sun.
Today, the Olsen Twins celebrate their 23rd Birthday.
Tim Allen also turns 56.
Malcolm McDowell turns 66.

WULF in Clown’s Clothing

From the "They-screw-you-at-the-Drive-Thru!" Department

I saw this news on a Talk Radio Blog, and I didn’t believe it, so I looked it up on Google and found an Arizona Daily Star article on it:
Operation WULF (Would U Like Fries) to sniff out impaired
So the Pima County Sherrifs will be undercover in Drive Thru restaurants looking for DUIs.

I hope no-one asks to be “Super Sized”.

The system was down, yo.

No word yet on the cause, but at 3:30 local time, the webhost for Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com went down and all the sites I know that are hosted by it were not available.

As of late this morning, the site returned.

But we’re feeling much better.

The Debate about Monsoons

From the "Back-in-my-day-we-predicted-weather-by-the-weather, not-the-calendar!" Department

When I first moved to Arizona in 1996, I learned about the great weather Tradition of the Monsoon Season, where water seems to fall from the sky and floods the desert in proportions which are unimaginable. And when you thought the signs warning about Flash Flooding were a sick twisted joke, your compact car is trapped in a wash up to its roof and you are being towed out like a tourist.

When I first learned about the Monsoon, I was instructed that the true start of the season was measured by levels of humidity, temperature, and barometric pressure, then followed with measurements of rainfall. But most importantly, the dew point is the official factor in announcing the Monsoon.
Like an Indian Summer, there has to be an extreme change between two conditions.

But, I’ve learned this year that the “Start of Monsoon Season” has been re-invented, and its a mistake, in my opinion.

The Business of Lunch

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 1:53:23 AM Tags:
From the "What-about-Where?" Department

The history of every major galactic civilization tends to pass through three distinct and recognizable phases, those of Survival, Inquiry, and Sophistication, otherwise known as the How, Why, and Where phases. For instance, the first phase is characterized by the question “How can we eat?” the second by “Why do we eat?” and the third by “Where shall we have lunch?”.
- Douglas Adams – The Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy

I was in a conversation, yesterday, on the subject of politics, and I made a pretty clever business analogy.

I don’t know if Cisco remembers the first Retailers conference we attended, because he was probably hiding from weird vendors. But there was a couple who were giving some interesting tips for Small Business Owners, and Retailers. Some of it was basic, and some of it was quite insightful.

Why does Bronco Towing hate Fitness?

From the "And-the-sign-said 'Long-haired-freaky-people-need-not-apply'" Department

As you may recall, I take an evening “hike” on Tumamoc Hill a.k.a. “The Deathmarch”. Anyways, I’ve been walking this hike 2-3 times a week for almost two years now, and I’ve gotten in the habit of parking in one of the parking lots of the local doctor’s office complexes around St. Mary’s Hospital.

Granted, there are various “No Parking” signs around, and I was blatantly disobeying them. And for the past two years, it has been a case of “No Harm No Foul.” Especially since, the offices close at 5:00 PM, and the Deathmarch opens at 5:30 PM. So the lots are vacant between 5:00 and when the offices open the next business day.

Until this month.
