A Personal Observation

From the "Last-Time-I-was-sober, man-I-felt-bad" Department

I need to stop drinking Wild Turkey 101 in the evenings when I am writing posts to Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com, as, when I am re-reading the posts that The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com compose, in the evenings, and I’m finding too many syntax errors, which I am correcting the next day.

Well, the Swine Flu managed to swing through the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Vicinity, and several of my circle of friends have been diagnosed with it.

They all survived. And are currently healthy.

Mid-Mid Term Elections

I thought that I would have outsmarted The-Evil-Doctor-Merlin-Channing-Lowe-Jr. on this off-off-season election day, but alas, I was thwarted multiple times. It appears that TheChan has stepped up his efforts to disenfranchise me. And regardless of my efforts, Dr. Chan has thwarted me, yet again.

Boxen

From the "Boxen: From-the-Latin-for-multiple-desktop-computers" Department

As I’ve been packing for the big move on Saturday, I’ve found that I’m having a hard time putting my life into boxes.

Before, it was easy. But now, I have much more fragile things. And it does not compartmentalize well.

Here I Am

The Move is over, and the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-Compound Geek-O-Sphere has found the internet.

So, as far as the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com readership cares, the move is complete.

So why do I still have all this unpacking to do?

The Fourth Seal

From the "And-I-saw-a-Pale-Horse-with-a-Pale-Rider-Upon-it" Department

7 When the Lamb broke the fourth seal, I heard the voice of the fourth living creature saying, “Come.”
8 I looked, and behold, an ashen horse; and he who sat on it had the name Death; and Hades was following with him. Authority was given to them over a fourth of the earth, to kill with sword and with famine and with pestilence and by the wild beasts of the earth.

The End of the World is Nigh.

The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com are now the owners of a Cellular Phone.

And part of me has died.

Jeremy R. Gilby is now officially on the Grid.

Everyone is asking, so I guess I’m telling the story of my crossing over.

So I wrote a song about it (not really) wanna hear it? It goes something like this:

The Hillary Curse

From the "A-Life-Long-Yankees-Fan-from-Chicago" Department

I missed this commentary on the Almost-but-not-quite-the-most-boring-sport to watch, Baseball, and the significant World Series event of Late October and Early November.

It marked the end of what I, and others have called, the Hillary Clinton Curse.

If you are reading this, than Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com has successfully updated to WordPress 2.8.6..

This was my first automatic update since the Fully Money of WordPress 2.8.5, and while it worked, there was a slight hangup, but I don’t think it was WordPress’s fault.

Book Review :: Catch 22

From the "Yossarian-Lives" Department

Catch 22, by Joseph Heller, was one of those novels which was always on my “I’ll get around to reading it” list. It seemed like an enigma, as I knew that this very book came up with the phrase of a Catch-22, a paradox in rules, regulations, procedures, or situations in which one has knowledge of being or becoming a victim but has no control over it occurring. So I was curious as to where the term came from.

I didn’t get the answer I was expecting (and it was not in the novel at all (the origin of the term) but rather it was discovered in my extracurricular research that the term was made up, to give the book a catchy title) but what I did not expect pleased me.

It is now off the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Reading List

The Eve of Thanksgiving

Filed under: LocalJeremy @ 5:00:51 PM
From the "I-don't *know*, Margo!" Department

As many of the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com readership knows, there is a long tradition of the Thanksgiving Eve Party to kick off the holiday season. Where The-Evil-Doctor-Merlin-Channing-Lowe-Jr. and The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com set aside their diametrically opposed interests and usher in the new holiday season.

This year is no exception, even though I am working on Thanksgiving. (First time I’ve not celebrated Thanksgiving, ever.)

I’ve talked about the slow decline in the signal-to-noise ratio, and my disappointment in it.

With the Holiday Season upon us, there are more people traveling, and with more people, there are more childrens. And with more childrens more screaming childrens.

Amy Alkon, the Advice goddess has some signal to cut through the noise.

Screaming kids and airplanes: Mayday! Mayday!

A conversation overheard at the Regional-Third-Party-Call-Center.

One note: This was the Saturday of the “holiday weekend”, so while the Pharmacy was open, Doctor’s Offices were not (I’m looking at you The-Evil-Doctor-Merlin-Channing-Lowe-Jr..)
Also note: Doctor’s provide Prescriptions, Pharmacists fill them. (some people get these two roles confused)

What About Apollo Twelve?

From the "Man, that-may-have-been-a-small-one-for-Neil, but-that's-a-long-one-for-me." Department

Hey, remember all the hoopla over the Fourtieth Anniversary of Apollo 11?

November was the 40th Anniversary of Apollo 12.

Granted, I didn’t expect any media attention on the Second manned lunar landing. (And I almost missed it, and I put it on my GMail Calendar [Gmail failed in reminding me... Bad GMail, Bad] and just remembered to mention it on Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com.)

On November 14th, Pete Conrad, Alan Bean, and Richard Gordon took off from Earth and performed mankind’s second visit to the moon.

It secured that mankind could visit the moon, again. And with more practice, it could go again, and again.
