Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com welcomes you to the year that wiped 2009 off the calendar.

According to Arthur C. Clarke, or at least the Hollywood interpretation of Clarke, this is the year we make contact.

I’m pretty sure that I was promised a Flying Car…

The Men Who Plan Beyond Tomorrow!

I saw this on Power Line Blog and found it worthwhile to reprint.

The Men Who Plan Beyond Tomorrow

It is a series of magazine ads, from Seagram’s VO Canadian whiskey, which they used in their advertising.

Most of them were pretty amazingly accurate, even for World War II era. Almost 1984-esque.

But less Orwellian.

Peach Schnapps

Peach Schnapps, sadly, was the tasty adult beverage, that was not beer, that The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com were first introduced too.

It was on my Europe tour that I was introduced to it.

It was a wise man that said, “Despise not the days of small beginnings.”

Where are the Carriers? :: Haiti Edition

Filed under: SuperCarriersJeremy @ 7:05:46 PM
From the "The-U.S.S. Carl-Vinson-vs. Geological-Disasters" Department

In the wake of the Earthquake in Haiti, and in echo of the efforts of the US Navy after the Tsunami, and Hurricane Katrina, the U.S.S. Carl Vinson has been deployed to the Caribbean to help relief efforts in the disaster that is Haiti.

It has been a LONG time since my last Where are the Carriers? post, and I thought everyone needed an update, as a lot has changed.

Hotspots :: India and Pakistan

Filed under: PontificationsJeremy @ 10:40:12 AM
From the "That-blowed-up-real-good, didn't-it?" Department

In the Global War on Terror, and George W. Bush’s Axis of Evil, I fear we might have lost media presence in one hot spot that, when I look closely, scares the hell out of me.

We have the media accented hotspots:

  • North Korea
  • Afghanistan
  • Iran
  • Iraq (not so much) but it is still on the media’s map.
  • Russia and Georgia, and as a postulate to that, Russia and Ukraine.

But there is one that is missing in the GeoPolitical Front

  • India and Pakistan.

On the Philadelphia Eagles 2009 Season

Filed under: FootballJeremy @ 2:12:56 PM
From the "Losing-thee-times-to-an-arch-rival" Department

I have not commented much on Football, this season, in fact, the last football post I authored was on the Eagles’ Bye Week.

While it was not the best of Eagles’ seasons, my favorite team did make it to the playoffs, and were serious contenders for not only the NFCEast Champion, but also the 2nd seed in the NFC.

A Small Victory

Filed under: FootballJeremy @ 10:08:28 PM
From the "Cheers-for-WhoDat-Nation" Department

As all of you should know, my all-time favorite team in all sports is the Philadelphia Eagles. I have followed them since the late 1980s through present.

They are not going to the Super Bowl this year.

As some of you might know, I have another football team I’ve been perennially fond of, and that is the New Orleans Saints.

They are going to the Super Bowl, this year, and have won the NFC Championship, defeating the defecting Favre and the Minnesota Vikings.

The Modernist #23: On Populism

The Modernist Papers

I first heard of Populism in my College History Course of Post-Civil-War United States History. I was confused by it. At first, I saw it was a bunch of Union Thugs standing in the way of prgress (so it left a bad taste in my mouth). Then in a different sub-era they were opposing the divergence of the United States Treasury from the metallic (Gold), and the bi-metallic system (Gold and Silver), which the Fed needed to do to (and eventually did.)

Eventually, I figured out that the Populism movement was for the little man, and at the same time was transitory. It switched between two positions, if you will:

  • Opposition to the Elite, where the Elite were the Big Businesses and the Corporations
  • Opposition to the Elite, where the Elite were Big Government

You can probably see that the two polarities were often polar opposites. And the minority at the time would claim they were the populists.
