Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com :: 4 Years

From the "Four-Years, and one-thousand-one-hundred-and-eighty-nine articles-later" Department

Its amazing, last year at this date Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com was celebrating 3-years of bloghood; today, a year later, it celebrates 4-years!

It is amazing how time and space work.

Even more amazing, 2 Years ago the SAME Website celebrated 2-years!

What are the odds that a website celebrates an anniversary on the SAME EXACT DAY?
Awhile back, Randy asked the perennial question: Why do you blog?
I ask myself that question everyday.

The Answer changes almost at the same rate.

Just several months ago, my answer was something like this:

But then again, I’m hardly a political/news blog. I really don’t have a theme. And I prefer it that way.
But this blog DOES have a purpose, the primary being a line of communication to Raymond and Sylvia Gilby in Perkasie PA, and to Joe and Angie Tobey; they are my primary audience. (The fact that the rest of you read is a great bonus.)
I’m also learning that my co-workers are reading this blog religously (I’m looking at you Dave, Jeanie and Tawnie.)
So when Hewitt talked about blogging in the workplace, I became quite interested.

Once upon a time, I wanted a website to capture and collect my zany ideas. (eStrife-dot-com is a good example, the The-Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Vernacular Library is another.)

I was never one to keep a diary, or a journal. Probably becuase I hated the physical act of writing. (And my penmenship isn’t the greatest in the world) It wasn’t until college that I learned that I enjoy writing. (And the wordprocessor made all the difference there.) So perhaps the blog is just an outlet for all that blocked up melencholy?

Another reason I blog is to capture history. The present of 3 years ago, is the history of today. I like to page back to entries of years past, and remember.

I talk about politics alot, more than I like, really. Usually, I blog about what’s on my mind, to help clear my head, and get my thoughts out so I can think about something else. (So its theraputic, in a way, but that is a secondary or tertiary benefit, its more of a ramification than a primary driver.) And there are days (like before elections, or when there is a new Supreme Court nominee) that I really take notice at what our elected officials are doing; and I have to say something.
I’m not out to indoctrinate anyone to my political thinking. I just like to point out inconsistencies and things that frustrate me. You all need to make up your own mind.

Then there is the Cubicle Culture; I can’t think of anything more entertaining than shoving hundreds of unlike people into one building, everyday, and expecting the place to be productive. They should make a reality show out of this crazy mixed up idea.

Blogs these days are becoming cyclic in their popularity.
One day, they save the universe.
The next, they are the icon of all that is vile and nasty in society.

I hope Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com remains right in the middle of that spectrum.

Here’s to another 4-years!

  4. Look, it’s a comment. Please keep blogging, as I will have nothing else to read if you were to stop. Happy Blog Anniversary!

  5. I am not a football fan. I am not a politics fan. I am not a member or even a victim of the Cubical Jungle. Perhaps Jeremy-Gilby-Dot-com’s bloggiversary is a time for me to ask myself not, “Why do I blog,” but “Why do I read this blog, Jeremy-Gilby-Dot-Com?” I think it comes down to one basic factor.

    Jeremy Gilby.

In appreciation and congratulation for The Fourth Annual Jeremy-Gilby-Dot-Com Bloggiversary,
    Cindy

  6. …actually, I suppose this is the THIRD Annual Jeremy-Gilby-Dot-Com Bloggiversary, isn’t it? Technicality. Mere technicality.

  9. I have a love/hate relation ship with your blog. Keep in mind I don’t like blogs in general. Bloated, ego-driven, volcanoes of generally unwanted thoughts and opinions all masked in anonymity. From the standpoint of “news” they are the antithesis of (and no better than) big buisness journalism. From the personal standpoint it’s the equivalent of putting a paper bag over your head and wandering the streets asking people to read your diary and comment on it.

I don’t even like the word “blog”. Welcome to the pretenders that use the psedo-slang of “bev-mo” or “za”.

The difference is I have a connection to you so this blog is personal to me. You are smart and funny and we have many things in common. Your lopsided world view and obsession with the naval fleet aside.

I come to your blog because of our personal connection but I stay because of the clarity of thought that you write with. Regardless of how infuriating your post may be.

Why do I comment? Well that’s a good question. Partly as a way to interact with you outside of work… and partly because I want to anonymously have my thoughts, opinions, and half-baked world view to be heard by others but I’m too lazy to create my own blog.

Yeah, I have a love/hate relationship with myself too.

  11. Maybe this will be the year that JG.c gets full-content feeds, which will ensure lots more reads and comments from me and others like me. ;)

  12. Okay, Okay
    I turned that feature on.

This was something I debated for awhile. I didn’t know which was more kosher? I thought the summary feed was less intrusive/annoying. But you have set me straight.

    Thank you

  13. Whoa … truly an ask-and-ye-shall-receive experience.

I only recommend summary feeds for people like journalists who excel at writing summaries. Even though I’ve dabbled in journalism, I can’t summarize my own stuff well at all, so … I just don’t do it.

    Thanks, man!

  14. So, you know, the fun of checking sitemeter is finding not only geographically from where people come, but also the exact permalink from which the decide to skip over to Rae’s.

Thus, I can now, nearly 10 months later, wish you a very belated, very happy blog birthday, and then get to come right back in 2 months and do it again :D Yea!

    Comment by Rae — November 15, 2006 @ 7:39:37 AM

  15. Rae, you already did!
