White House Front Man
Fox News is reporting that Tony Snow has accepted the offer from the White House to be the new White House Press Secretary.
Of course, the pundits at Fox News are celebrating this as a good idea.
The cronies at the AOL News Network, or the Microsoft News Network are moaning and groaning that Snow is just another Right-wing hack.
As I’ve mentioned before, I really like the Tony Snow Show and one of his strengths, in his daily commentary, is his discussion of White House Press Conferences.
Now, it seems that he is going to be putting “his money where his mouth is.”
Last week, many of his callers were saying that Snow should not only take the job, but teach people like David Gregory and Helen Thomas a lesson. (These people don’t understand the role of the White House Press Secretary).
The White House Press Secretary, is not only the mouthpeice of the Administration, it is also the advocate for the White House Press Corps to not only the President but to the Chief of Staff, and the Director of Communications. It is hardly a job to be envied, because you are often between a rock and a hard place. (Which is probably a good reason why White House Press Secretaries have a short employment half-life)
(Come on, people, don’t you watch The West Wing?)
For those of you who are confused, Tony Snow is a major political anchor/host in the Washington D.C. Bureau of Fox News.
Tony Snow is the host of Weekend Live with Tony Snow, which airs each Saturday from 12-2 PM/ET on FOX News Channel (FNC). Snow also serves as an FNC political analyst and contributes to the network’s political and election news coverage. Snow joined the network in 1996.
Snow previously served as host of FOX News Sunday (FNS), the FOX Broadcasting network’s Sunday morning public affairs program. As host of FNS from 1996 to 2003, Snow interviewed numerous world leaders, including National Security Advisor Condoleezza Rice; Secretary of State Colin Powell; Secretary of Defense Donald Rumsfeld; Sen. Minority Leader Tom Daschle, D-S.D.; Sen. Joseph Lieberman, D-Conn.; Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf; and former Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Before joining FOX News, Snow was a nationally syndicated columnist with The Detroit News from 1993 to 2001. He was also a columnist for USA Today from 1994 to 2000. Earlier, he served as an editorial writer at The Virginian-Pilot in Norfolk, VA; editorial page editor of The Daily Press in Newport News, VA; deputy editorial page editor of The Detroit News; and editorial page editor of The Washington Times. Snow’s career in journalism began in 1979 when he was an editorial writer for The Greensboro Record in North Carolina.
In 1991, Snow took a sabbatical from journalism to work in the White House for President George H. Bush. He first served as the deputy assistant to the president for communications and director of speechwriting, and later as deputy assistant to the president for media affairs.
Snow earned his bachelor’s degree in philosophy from Davidson College in Davidson, North Carolina. He grew up in Cincinnati and currently resides in Virginia with his wife, son, and two daughters.
Of course, now you have to wonder what kind of bias will be shown by White House Press Secretary Tony Snow to Fox News Senior White House Correspondent Jim Angle or White House Chief Correspondent Carl Cameron?

Will Snow’s appointment to be the face to the press for the administration rally President Bush’s conservative troops?

It’s an important job; one that requires a deep appreciation how vital a room full of screeching, hysterical journalists is to our democracy. As the person charged with carefully listening to the press and then informing the President of their wishes and needs, a White House Press Secretary must be more than a partisan mouthpiece for the Shrub, and possess the clarity of mind to see through Bush’s web of lies unbound by the restrictive shackles of reality.
Folks, the job has Helen Thomas’ name written all over it.
But instead of the Great Dane of the White House Press Corps, Bush gave us Tony Snow, a Faux News propagandist and right-wing hate radio jock who conceals his deep hatred for all living things with a frustrating veneer of good-natured optimism. The appointment amounts to little more than a slap in Thomas’ face. After 175 years of hounding American presidents like a bad case of genital warts, she gets passed over in favor of a fascist TV toady who’ll monopolize all the attention at her morning press briefings.
I doubt he’ll even observe the tradition of giving Helen the last word. Heck, he’ll probably interrupt her speeches to take phone calls from his listeners.
And from Scrappleface:
Bush Picks Snow, DNC Close to Naming Spokesman
(2006-04-27) — In an effort to recover from his all-time low approval ratings, President George Bush yesterday appointed conservative commentator Tony Snow as White House Press Secretary. In related news, Democrat National Committee Chairman Howard Dean said he’s close to naming a new spokesman for the DNC. While Mr. Dean wouldn’t disclose the name, he said, “I think we’ll have him on board by June, if the ratings trend at Air America continues.â€

I thought I had breaking news for you but due to the time difference, what was late for us was early for you.
Some White House sources have stated that Tony has accepted.
Snow has been critical of Bush lately. I wonder how that might be used by the press corp?

1) Would anyone expect less than a “right wing hack”? He’s the president’s press secratary for God’s sake! He’s paid to parrot, not think.
2) He definitely looks like less of a goober than the last guy.

I think most of the left-wing noise is coming around the fact that Snow is a professional media guy. (I can’t think of a previous Press Secretary that has Snow’s level of Media Experience going into the job :: Paper, TV, Radio and Internet.)
Most Press Secretaries go INTO Media after their stint behind the podium (George Stephanopoulos is a recent example) Snow is doing this backwards!
