FaceXPaces

It seems everyone and their grandmother has something called a MySpace account.

The odd thing is, I don’t hear anything GOOD about them.

User Friendly :: Facexpaces Gimick

From: User-Friendly-dot-org

It might seems strange that a blogger is complaining about something like MySpace, as to the average person the two behaviors (Blogging and MySpacing) are identical.

But, MySpace reminds me of those bad Geocities websites that were cropping up around 1997.
You know, embedded MIDI files playing noisily in the background.
Or Blink Tags! With CrAzY Jacked up colors <----- LOOK! Cause this isn’t important

Okay, I feel dirty coding that. I promise it will never happen again.

I’m being asked more and more, if I have a MySpace account, I’m pleased to say I don’t.
I can’t stand them. My every interaction with them has been negative.

My first interaction with them was someone hotlinking a picture of Freddie Mitchell after his 4th-and-26 play. It was plastered of this guys’ background, tiled. It looked awful, with this bright yellow text sprawled all over the place.
And then some awful music started playing, and I turned it off. But guess what, reload the page and it started again. I quickly left.

Now, I’ve ventured to other myspaces (usually people who hotlink to my images and bleeding my bandwidth) and its all the same.
Lousy layouts
Stupid music playing (or worse a video)
And a mindless conversation between a social network of friends not talking to each other.

Yeah, I want one of those.

I thought those free sites like Geocities went the way of Web 1.0…

Am I being an UberGeek, or am I being a Web Snob?

My only request, if you are a MySpace user; host your own images, and quit leeching off the rest of us.

I hate the site and it seems to be to be a breeding ground for online predators, do a google for predator and myspace if you want to become sick (no links since I know you hate to fix them)

  3. You’re being both, Jeremy, but … I’m with you. I’m on Facebook only because I was in graduate school for three months back in the fall; that’s as cutting-edge on the social networking scene of the kids as I get anymore.

As for MySpace … MySpace is the new Live Journal, which was the new Geoshitties …

  5. Yes, I’m becoming more and more certain that MySpace is the reason why the internet just isn’t for everybody.

  6. It’s interesting, to me, the same that owns most of MySpace also owns FoxNews.

  7. My wife just got one. Not for her own use (though I wouldn’t put it past her), but because her oldest nephew is 13 and just got his Myspace page. There is also a 12 year old nephew close behind (and a 6 year old nephew and and a 4 year old niece).

So it’s essentially a Spyspace account. She’s helping her sister out by keeping tabs on the kids. Once friended, she can view his page, what people are sending to him and what he sends to people.

It’s freakin’ Lord of the Flies out there! Literally. Nasty, awful stuff. All run by kids who have just discovered a world of limitless boundries at time when they are trying to find their boundaries. Add to that mix adults that just haven’t grown up, predators, cops, and spying parents and family members.

The scariest thing to me is how much private information kids are willing to share about themselves.

  8. Nice rant. I shall commend you for it. I don’t use Myspace even though a lot of my friends do. I don’t like it at all. I read Userfriendly and just did a search for Facexpaces and it got me to your site. I will say that this rant rocked.
