State of the Geek (2007)
And now, for entirely unimportant reasons, I would like to give my 33rd annual State of the Geek address.
The occasion for this address is the fact that the Earth is in a special position in its yearly orbit of the sun.
Today, the Olsen Twins celebrate their 21st Birthday.
Tim Allen also turns 54.
For those of you who don’t quite understand, just keep reading. As I mentioned, it is entirely unimportant.
The State of The Editors of Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com Address: 2007
The 33rd year of life was kind of a stop and take stock kind of year, as the previous one was so, well, conflicted.
It was a year of reflection, a year for guidance, and a year of a pontification.
It was a year of lamenting, and questions, and a few unexpected answers.
It was a year of reconnecting from last year’s sudden disconnects.
Life, as I know it today, it a lot different than it was 365 days ago. It looks different. It feels different. It smells and tastes different.
Some short term goals we’re accomplished, and at the same time some long term goals were put back on track.
Vocationally
- After a banner year, this year seems the opposite. It was a year of struggle to preserve control, and mindfulness. Lots of factors in the guise of “Change” leaped upon my work, this year; and it was a losing fight to keep them away. I may be wrong, but change was unwanted at this stage of the life of my existing processes.
- Survived another two Reorganizations, and one layoff.
- Launched a new version of the major product under my care.
Socially
- Ignoring my Ranting on the subject of Extroversion vs. Introversion, friends came out of the woodwork, this year. I was quite blessed to have them, and continually blessed they didn’t heed my poor analysis of myself and what I thought my needs are.
It brings a smile to my face to be able to write about them, like this.
Spiritually
- Studied the word “Refuge”
- Re-examined my giftings, especially around teaching.
Personal
- I’m exercising more. The Cubicle Jungle is turning me into a cubicle potato.
- I’m up to 8 miles of walking a day, in the span of 2 hours.
- Read a bunch of books
- Survived another year of Global Warming, and increased my Carbon Footprint by a few Mungovans.
- Got my Hair cut at least once.
Plans for Year 34:
- These are really stretch goals, things I hope to accomplish above my existing goals for life, work, and whatever:
- Walk 10 miles a day, in the span of 2 hours.
- Maybe start jogging
- Stop thinking of 34 as a bad number.
- Build Two computers
- Migrate Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com to someplace more stable
- Migrate the Jeremy-Gilby-dot-Compound to a house of its own. (No more Rent)
- Read more books
- Take a vacation (This one seems to be the hardest to do!)
Here is to another fun-filled trip around the sun.

Happy birthday, bro. Glad to see it’s starting to look up for you in those areas.

Thinking of you Jer, especially today!
Happy Birthday from your niece and nephew as well.

Another good SotG. :) I can actually help with the “migrate someplace more stable”, but for the fact that I’m on a similar system to your current host and have a control panel that’s on a funky port that you can’t access from work. But *I* give out shell accounts accessible via SSH. ;)
As for the vacation-taking: if you can swing it, take off the week of 2-6 Jul. With Independence Day mid-week, it’ll be the easiest week this year to be out-of-office. :)
All the best from Alabama.

Happy Birthday Jer!

Geof has a great idea! Why not go to someplace like, I don’t know, San Diego? Some great people might be there, and you could watch the fireworks from the flight deck of the USS Midway! You know you want to.

Have a wonderful 365 day trip around the sun. There also might be a birthday surprise soon when you will least expect it.
Comment by Dad — June 14, 2007 @ 4:34:11 AM
Thanks Dad, the surprise came just moments ago.
And you are right, I wasn’t expecting it.
Comment by Jeremy — June 14, 2007 @ 4:19:37 PM
The suspense is killing me.

But then again, who every really expects neon pink flamingo chairs? If you don’t mind, I’d like to see if I can fumigate your old chairs and get a little more life out of ‘em.

Your welcome and yes you do have good friends in Tucson; they were a big help and tell Deb thanks again from me when she gets back.
