Too Much Spam

From the "My-god! Its-full-of-Spam!" Department

I’ve been going over my spam logs for Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com and since Friday, I’ve been getting at least one piece of comment/trackback spam every minute. So, I’ve downloaded the latest version of Bad Behavior to put as the primary defense again.

Spam Karma was doing to the trick, but it is thrashing my comment table. I had to do something.

Please, take a moment and try to leave a comment. If you can’t please let me know at the Backup Blog.

  4. I just switched from Comcast cable internet to Frontier DSL. With that came a DSL phone line. Now we hardly ever use our home phone. My wife has a fax attached and that’s it. But I had a phone on it lately for testing purposes and I naturally haven’t had a chance to put it on the “do not call” list yet.

Seems like at least twice a day I’ve been getting calls even though no one knows the number, and for fun I’ve been answering them…

    Caller: “Joe?”
Me: “No. I think you have the wrong number.”
Caller: “Oh well my secretary must have given me the wrong name, who am I speaking to?”
Me: “Who am *I* speaking to??”
Caller: “I have good news about your mortgage…”
    Me: [cick]

Now I’ve been off the regular phone grid for a while, is this the new phone spam style? It’s all mortgages and they all play the say-a-name-and-then-pretend-you-just-got-it-wrong trick to start the conversation. I don’t know why, but I’m starting to enjoy the fact that I know up front these guys are selling me something and yet they think they are tricking me into revealing something. I almost enjoy answering the phone!

I need to start asking what company they are with. See if it’s all the same one. all using the same or similar tactic seems just too coincidental.

  5. I remember when my family moved from Hatfield, PA to Perkasie, PA (Yeah, one really greater suburb to another) we used to get wrong-number calls from the same guy, asking for “Joe”.

One time, he got into an argument with G.B., that Joe was really there, and she was just at the wrong house.

We think he was a few sheets short of a ream.

We never found out who Joe was

  6. What??? Refresh my memory?

  7. What is to refresh? I lost count of the number of times that guy called:
    “Hey, Joe!”
    “Sorry, wrong number”
    “Is Joe there?”
    “No, No Joe here.”
“Are you sure, I call this number all the time.”
“I know, I remember you dialing the wrong number before..”

  8. Reminds me of a phone conversation I had with a sale guy one time. After determining that they have the piece I need…

    [Him] Ok, what’s your name?
    [Me] Chan
[Him] Chan, that sounds asian. Are you asian?
    [Me] No.
[Him] Hmm… are your parents asian then?
[Me] No, that’s why I’m not asian.
[Him] Oh. So do your parents like China?
[Me] I think I have the wrong number I’ll call back later.
    [Him] No problem.

  9. Now I think I remember talking with the guy on the phone. Very long time ago…

The one thing I remember is “Yo Louie told me to cawll when I got off at the Hazelton exit”

  10. Yes, G.B., it was shortly after we moved to Perkasie, and were living in the Apartment (though it followed us to the house a year later) – you were all of five at the time.

  11. Aside: While my Spam count was only partially dented, it looks like Bad Behavior is behaving nicely. There Jeremy-Gilby-dot-com regulars can still comment.

    YAY!

  12. Thankfully we don’t get many sales calls anymore, thanks to the Do Not Call List and it doesn’t hurt having someone work for the DMA.

I just need to get rid of the door to door solicitors. They are annoying with their opening lines..”Do you care about the environment” “Do you think you are going to heaven” “Do you care that NJ dumps its trash in PA” “Do you like Pizza”.

Yes, I have heard them all…and I just say NO!
