Why Little Jeremy is no longer a member of the Republican Party
I should say up front, this was not a spur of the moment decision. I had been contemplating this all the way back in the 2008 Primaries. But, contrary to two previous articles I have written: How Little Jeremy Became a Republican and THM: Why Jeremy is not a Libertarian, I have left the party of Ronald Reagan, and went to the kooks.
(Aside: Unless Cisco also changed parties, recently, we are Of the Same Political Party Again)
First, I have been becoming more and more dissatisfied with the Two-Party system. I dislike the Democrats platform, and find very few things to agree with. But what I agree with the Republicans about, they do nothing about, and what I disagree with them about, they either ignore or refuse to change.
I think it all came to a head in the Primary. First, I was dissatisfied with ALL of the Primary Candidates. But even before that, in the years of 2000-2006, I saw the Republicans become fat with their own success. They became tolerant of some pretty bad behavior, not only the kinds of things that Democrats were thrown out for, in 1994, but a lack of ethics among their own members. And they didn’t learn their mistakes after they lost big in 2006, as the corruption was still there.
Now, I’m no fan of the Libertarian Party Leadership, or all their policies, but I’ve seen a lot of new Libertarians coming around, and I find myself in agreement for their urging of small government. Right now, in this political era, wanting small government is almost synonymous with limiting government growth, since it appears to be expanding faster than we can casually observe.
Also, I did not want to register as non-affiliated. I wanted to still participate in SOME Primary. (There is no Independent Party in Arizona) And Libertarian was the only other party that wasn’t Democrat, Republican, or Green.
And as much as Liberals want to label people like me, I do not want to regulate social issues, just like I don’t want regulation of economic issues. There are lots of things that I find distasteful about free will, but when constraints become oppressive, even the innocent are punished, and we, as a society still lose. I think Libertarians have the best view of this principle, even if most of them are a bunch of closet anarchists. But I see a turning of the tide in the Libertarians, and I would like to be a part of that.
Thirdly, the Libertarian Party is a smaller party, that means I have more of a say when it comes to party decisions. I like the sound of that.
So that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Welcome Jeremy! Now get ready for Libertarian kooks (and maybe some cooks) to knock on your door and ask you to support their wacky platforms.

Much as I don’t like being a Republican, I don’t think I can go back to being a Libertarian. I was content to throw my vote away with them for many years, but when the first post-9/11 local election confronted me with legalized ferret ownership as a key part of the platform I knew it was time for me to walk away.
Sadly, every party feels obligated to become a parody of itself in an effort to promote its message.

Being a member of the party doesn’t mean you have to vote for their candidates.

I’m definitely not married to the Libertarians. But I see more opportunity there than in the Republican Party. Really, all I’m losing is the opportunity to pick the Republican Candidates during the Primary.

Yeah I guess as long as only the fringe are willing to abandon and go with an alternative then all you get is fringe candidates. I’m in Jer! Just don’t knock on my door you cooks.

Here in VA the primaries are open and registration does not require a party affiliation. I’ve decided to consider the Constitution Party before anything or anyone else, Libertarians second, and independents third.
