The issue isn't that People living in the United States are not Americans, because that is true. The issue is that not all Americans live in the United States.
Americans are anyone who originates or is naturalized to the Continents of North and South America. Just as European is anyone who originates or is naturalized to the continent of Europe. Asian to Asia, Australian to Australia, etc.

To help further illustrate the misnomer, are people native to Hawaii also "Americans"?
